by Helen MacDermott
As spring approaches, many people will begin the dreaded but necessary task of spring cleaning. However, spring cleaning can apply to more than embarking on household chores; your career may need some sprucing up as well. Many industries have regulations and qualifications that change, and it is important to stay up to date. Why not choose this time of year to spring into action and get caught up on work responsibilities?

This increased college requirement has led many accountants to pursue their continuing education programs online due to the flexibility of online courses, which allow students to study after work or during their lunch hour.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, 42 states and the District of Columbia now require accountants to complete 150 hours of college work, which is 30 additional hours to the typical bachelor’s degree. Several other states will soon require similar education. It’s important for accountants and prospective accounting majors to check the rules and regulations in their states to make sure all guidelines are met. This increased college requirement has led many accountants to pursue their continuing education programs online due to the flexibility of online courses, which allow students to study after work or during their lunch hour.

Every state requires accountants to pass the certified public accountant (CPA) exam. But even before taking the exam, the majority of states require experience in the accounting field; it is highly encouraged to research the requirements in your state.

For license renewal almost all states require accountants to take some continuing education courses. These courses come in a variety of formats, from courses at universities to accounting association seminars and group study programs.

One designation many accountants receive is from the Institute of Management Accountants. The certified management accountant (CMA) designation is awarded to people who have management accounting experience and meet the education requirements. Other certifications, each with specific education requirements, are available from various accounting agencies such as the Institute of Internal Auditors and The Accreditation Council for Accountancy and Taxation.

eLearners.com is one resource to help find online accounting degree programs. This web resource of EducationDynamics offers nearly 100 accredited accounting degrees from online colleges and universities. The site’s searchable database allows people to compare different programs to find the perfect fits for their individual needs.

To advance in any career, but especially a regulated career like accounting, it’s important to read up on the latest industry standards and regulations and continuously advance your education. So this spring, do just that. Make sure you spring forward instead of falling behind by advancing your education.
