SUMMARY

Alaska Industrial Hardware, a subsidiary of Bering Straits Native Corporation is currently seeking qualified applicants for “Staff Accountant, Payroll & Special Projects” to perform its payroll functions and other accounting projects in Anchorage, Alaska. This position administers and performs operations of the Payroll Department involved in the processing of time and earnings records of all employees, resulting in the biweekly distribution of payroll checks. Prepares various reports and payments for filing/transmittal to benefit plans, insurance carriers, and governmental agencies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Performs all regular duties associated with the preparation, generation, and distribution of biweekly payrolls.

• Performs duties associated with the overall administration of the payroll department.

• Drafts payroll policy and procedural materials.

• Interprets for employees, staff, and management, payroll policies, government regulations, and keeps abreast of new developments and changes in these areas.

• Acts as liaison with the Accounting and HR departments for problem resolution and error correction.

• Develops, recommends, and implements systems and procedural changes for the Payroll Department.

• Acts as liaison with ADP for problem resolution and error correction.

• Reviews approved personnel action forms to determine names, rates of pay, hour changes, and termination/leave of absence transactions of other employees.

• Prepares payroll data input sheets, reflecting above transactions, as well as PTO, wage assignments/garnishments, hours and dollars for all employees, and voluntary deductions; investigates questionable entries as necessary.

• Assumes responsibility for all non-routine unscheduled payroll transactions, including voiding unused checks, issuing stop-payment orders, issuing replacement checks, and preparing hand-drawn checks for emergency leaves, terminations, etc.

• Monthly journal entries.

• Responsible for Co-op reimbursements and other special accounting projects as needed.

• Other duties as assigned by the Controller.

QUALIFICATIONS - EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION

Required (Minimum) Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting

• Advanced Microsoft Office Suite skills to include extensive Microsoft excel experience required

• Minimum of 2 years progressively responsible relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Ability to work independently as well as with the team

• Able to communicate complex issues clearly

• Excellent organizational and critical thinking skills

• Knowledge and understanding of payroll processes including mapping and AJE’s

• Great attention to detail and accuracy

• Likes to solve problems by discovering the root cause and training to assure improved performance

• Possess a sense of urgency

• Ability to meet deadlines

Preferred qualifications/skills/experience:

• ADP Payroll/Workforce now experience is a plus

• Prior public accounting experience is a plus

• CPA or CPA candidate is a plus

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work Environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be borne by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Job is performed in an office setting working in close proximity with other Accounting Department Team members and exposure to multiple computer screens. Requires extensive use of a computer, keyboard, mouse and multi-line telephone system. The work described herein is primarily a modern office setting. Occasional overtime may be required.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFYING FACTORS

As a condition of employment, required to pass a pre-employment drug screening, as well as have acceptable reference and background check. Must have reliable transportation to/from work.
