My family and I relocated to South Florida in 1993, at which time I began my tenure with Gerson, Preston, Robinson & Company, P.A. I experienced firsthand the difficulties and frustrations of meeting the many demands of my profession and balancing my family life. Upon becoming a partner in the firm in 2002, one of my goals was to develop and implement policies that accommodated the needs of the office and the employees' families.

Many employees, especially women, have left our profession because they found the job demands and the home demands to be incompatible. Sometimes if they leave the workforce to have a family, they do not come back because they cannot find the right scenario. Considering that women make up about 50% of the workforce, it makes no sense to force a choice that has traditionally led to great attrition. Our goal is to retain our valuable resources through flexibility in scheduling. This flexibility has allowed us to retain and attract qualified employees who would have left the profession at least temporarily and in many cases permanently.

Our "flexible schedule policy" enables women with families to work part-time or reduced-hours schedules. For example, one woman works a 30-hour week, another works weekends and two afternoons per week from her home, and another works five days a week. As their children grow, we expect that these schedules may be modified to accommodate home obligations. If and when these employees decide to increase their hours to full-time, we will have highly trained and loyal full-time employees.

We have also allowed for flexibility in terms of the hours an employee works, enabling employees to spend time with their families. For example, an employee may work an hour or two during non-traditional business hours and then attend a child's sporting or scholastic event that takes place during traditional business hours. We also provide our employees with additional paid holidays so they can spend more quality time with their families.

We realize that our employees must balance their professional and personal lives and try to make all reasonable efforts to accommodate them. Staff retention is most easily accomplished when our employees are happy with their professional and personal lives.

The changing demographics of the workforce may have forced us to evaluate quality-of-life issues that were not present a generation ago. After evaluating and adapting, we feel that we are better positioned for the future and our firm will be that much stronger and better situated for its next 50 years.
