Accounting is the backbone of all businesses and today most corporations want to hire only competent and confident accountants. With that said, financial accounting is neither simple nor precise as a career. If you are a financial accountant you will answer two basic questions. What was the performance of the business last year? What was the dollar value of assets and liabilities of the business in the past year? These questions are answered in the balance sheet and in the income statement. These questions appear to be easy to answer but in actuality they are not.
Determining financial performance and the condition of the company is very difficult. There are three factors for properly determining the accounting status and recognized problems that exist. First, we don't have the exact criteria of financial performance. The second factor is that money is the fundamental unit for measurement and the value of money keeps changing. Third, economic status is often distorted by managers.
Interpersonal skills are very important for a successful accounting career. While you will be doing accounting work alone, you cannot avoid being part of a larger project which means you will have to work as part of a team.
Your ability to communicate with clients and colleagues is important apart from excellent database and spreadsheet skills. An accountant should be familiar with working on various accounting applications. You should also be aware of all new systems to track financial data.
