Getting Accounting Internships
If you are enrolled in a degree program with an accounting major, you will be able to gain valuable experience and professional contacts by undertaking internships during your summer vacations. Most internships are unpaid, although some pay a token amount every week. It is therefore important that you get a personal benefit from investing your time. Interning just for the sake of it is counterproductive. You need to seek internships that provide the training and experience benefits that will help you qualify for entry-level accounting jobs upon graduation. However, you also need to qualify for the internships. The following are some tips to help you obtain accounting internships:
1. Maintain good grades. There is a lot of competition for good accounting internships because they often lead to accounting jobs, and for college students grades are an important determinant for recruiters. It is therefore important to maintain consistently good grades, particularly in subjects related to accountancy.
2. Know your career direction. Do you want to be a chartered accountant, a certified public accountant, or an auditor? Are you more interested in accounting finance jobs? If you are only in your first year, you may not have decided on your direction yet; however, it is important to think about the sort of accounting role you would like in the future because this will determine the type of internship that would benefit you the most. You are far more likely to obtain an internship if you can explain why you want to work for a particular company.
3. Target the sort of companies you would like to work for. This does not refer simply to targeting chartered accounting firms if you want to be a chartered accountant; it also means considering the size and culture of various organizations. There are companies which offer great career paths, but they may want a commitment to work long hours for many years. Do you want to work in a smaller, local organization or a large, city-based company? Perhaps you would prefer to work in public service or for a not-for-profit organization? Your future career direction should determine which internships you apply for and the clarity of your career goals will influence your ability to obtain them. Internships often lead to graduate accounting jobs, so it pays to have a long-term view when applying for them.
4. Your college career office is an excellent place to find internship opportunities as well as accounting job openings for graduates. Guidance counselors will generally be able to tell you about the reputations of different organizations when it comes to internships. Your college may have particularly good relationships with certain companies which aim to provide good training opportunities for students.
5. Don’t forget to check your student email account. Internship opportunities are often sent straight to your inbox, so it is important to check your email every single day. Also read your college newspaper and, in particular, read any online information provided by your faculty. You need to be on top of this information because internship positions are filled quickly.
6. Online job sites that focus on internships and graduate positions can be excellent sources of entry-level accounting jobs and internships. You can find these sites by simply doing an Internet search.
7. Mainstream online job websites are also potential sources of internship jobs. You can use the search option to easily locate them and you can also request email notifications whenever a new opportunity is submitted to the site.
8. If you already have some accounting firms in mind that you would like to intern for, why not be proactive and regularly check their websites for employment opportunities? Many organizations advertise new positions on their own websites and allow you to apply online. You can also send a letter to the company expressing an interest in working for them as an intern and requesting an opportunity for an appointment.
9. Internships can also be organized through professional internship companies. Students who can afford these services can convey the type of internship they are looking for and what specifically they wish to gain from the experience. The company will then contact organizations it works with to try to organize the right experience for you. For many, this also involves overseas experiences, so that you obtain training while at the same time experiencing another culture. Of course, these services come at a price, and they are only available to those who can afford them.
10. Even if you obtain interviews for the internships you have applied for, you still need to convince the organization to hire you. Accounting is a formal profession, so make sure you show up to your interview well-dressed in professional attire. Be polite yet friendly and willing to answer questions. It is important to be able to articulate your professional goals and how you feel the internship will help you achieve them. It is also essential to know something about the organization you are applying for.
If you approach obtaining internship accounting jobs as seriously as you would approach any accounting job openings, you will not only be offered opportunities to intern, you will be offered the right opportunities to fulfill your career aspirations. By taking a strategic approach to interning, accounting students will be able to gain the benefits they need to give them a competitive edge in seeking graduate accounting jobs. In other words, the long-term advantages of accounting internships to your personal and financial wellbeing should not be underestimated.

One of the most interesting things to me is witnessing people when they make a complete reversal in their lives and overnight become incredibly successful, happy, and fulfilled people. Perhaps the reason this is so fascinating is that it happens so rarely. When this does happen, more often than not, the major life change is related to a career, location, mate, or some other important aspect of the... |
