Pasadena, CA  — With many professionals in a variety of industries feeling down and out in today’s declining economy, accounting professionals hold a strong place in the current and future U.S. job market, according to AccountingCrossing.

AccountingCrossing (www.accountingcrossing.com), which currently has more than 70,000 active accounting-related jobs, recently found that the number of newly added accounting jobs on the site is multiplying at a stunning rate. In January AccountingCrossing added 6,150 new accounting jobs. Only a month later January’s number more than quadrupled to 25,200 new accounting jobs added for February.

Ajilon Finance’s 2008 Salary Guide reported that despite news of an economic recession, the number of accounting jobs jumped up by 30,000 in the fourth quarter of 2007 alone. The U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook also anticipates positive accounting job growth with projections that the industry should expand 18% by 2016, which is faster than the average for all other occupations. This is anticipated to be a result of stricter accounting and auditing regulations, in addition to an expanding economy.

The bureau’s report states, ''An increase in the number of businesses, changing financial laws and corporate governance regulations, and increased accountability for protecting an organization’s stakeholders will drive growth.''

As of 2006, the accounting industry had 1.3 million accountants and auditors. That number is expected to reach 1.5 million within the next eight years. The Bureau of Labor Statistics adds that those who have earned CPAs or have college educations will do very well in the accounting job market. Accounting professionals who have accounting backgrounds in specialized areas also will tend to soar in the accounting job market. These specialized accounting areas include international business, specific industries, and current legislation.
