The Center for Biomolecular Structure and Dynamics (CBSD)
invites applications for a
Budget Analyst II
. This position is responsible for providing financial services to CBSD as follows:
Provides timely grant proposal assistance for faculty applicants. Incumbent is responsible for learning sponsor requirements, developing multi-year budgets consistent with project constraints in collaboration with faculty applicant, and submitting financial documents within internal and external web-based software platforms.
The position is responsible for grant management from award acceptance to close-out, including coordinating and approving purchases, monitoring spending, allocating payroll costs, reconciling accounts, executing and approving cost transfers, forecasting costs and preparing routine financial reports to Principal Investigators (PI).
Incumbent is responsible for preparing hiring paperwork for letter of appointment and graduate contracts, as well as faculty/staff labor distributions based upon project needs, in coordination with employee’s academic department.
The Budget Analyst will work both as a team member and independently, and must take initiative as a self-starter, be resourceful and keep apprised of specific grant and sponsor regulations. Acute attention to detail and organizational skills are essential.
The position positively represents the CBSD and acts as a liaison between the center and its affiliated UM academic departments, faculty, staff and students, the Office of Sponsored Programs, and the public.
After 6 months the incumbent will develop the:
Ability to understand university, state, federal and accounting practices and budget processes.
Ability to understand University of Montana Business Services’ and Office of Sponsored Programs’ best practices and guidelines.
Knowledge of grant related federal forms, ability to review proposals prior to submission.
Ability to use UM specific software including Banner, Cayuse, UMDW, Grizmart, U-Approve.
This position reports to CBSD Director of Strategic Fiscal Planning Johanna Anderson. Johanna Anderson reports to CBSD Director, Dr. Bruce Bowler.
Required Skills
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience applying accounting principles and budget management practices and procedures.
Demonstrated organizational, time-management, and multi-tasking skills, and ability to meet deadlines with great attention to detail
Demonstrated problem-solving ability
Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and to work on projects independently and as a team member
Demonstrated consistency, clarity in communication skills, and the ability to explain fiscal information and concepts so that “non-accounting” people will understand.
A positive and constructive attitude, ability to interact patiently and respectfully with co-workers
Ability to learn and interpret sponsor guidelines for grant proposal development and financial management
Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel
Adaptability and capacity to meet challenges and learn new skills
Ability to establish effective working relationships with students, staff, faculty and administration
Minimum Required Experience
High School diploma and four (4) years of experience working in an accounting, budget and grants management capacity or an equivalent combination of education and experience
or an Associate’s Degree in a related field, and two (2) years of experience working in an accounting capacity or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Preferred Qualifications
Associate's degree in Accounting and three to four (3-4) years of job-related experience in accounting, (including accounting coursework), or equivalent education and work experience
Experience in performing accounting functions and grant functions
Experience in pre-award and/or post-award financial grant management
Experience in job-costing or tracking project specific costs
Experience in developing and maintaining excel workbooks to track actual costs and expense projections to budget
Software experience in Cayuse, eRA Commons, Grants.gov

The Center for Biomolecular Structure and Dynamics (CBSD) is designated by the Board of Regents as a Research Center of Excellence within **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***.. The mission of the Center is to support collaborative research among faculty investigators that employs the principles of physics, chemistry and structural biology to address significant problems in biology and medicine by (a) seeking extramural research center support to fund promising investigators and research projects, (b) providing financial support of core instrument facilities and expertise; (c) supporting students and programmatic activities of the Molecular and Biomedical Sciences (MBS) Graduate Program and (d) sponsoring programmatic activities such as seminars and workshops. These goals shall be funded in part by an NIH Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) award and from SPABA funds available from grants submitted by UM faculty through the CBSD.
