Assists Director, Investment Accounting in managing the accounting and reporting for Torchmark’s fixed maturity and equity portfolio at the consolidated and individual subsidiary levels. Responsibilities include review and maintenance of investment data required for GAAP and statutory accounting and reporting; review and reporting of investment transactions; preparation of quarterly and annual statutory statements; preparation of annual audited statutory reports; preparation of annual investment surveys; responsibility for certain individual subsidiary accounting and reporting. Work closely with personnel in Investment Operations and Financial Reporting.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Responsible for the accounting and reporting of Torchmark subsidiaries – review and post investment transactions; prepare general ledger entries and month-end reconciliations to the general ledger and custodian; prepare quarterly statutory statements and subsidiary board reports; prepare annual statutory statement, supplements, and annual investment surveys.
Assist in preparation of IMR, AVR, and quarterly notes to the statutory financial statements. Review statutory disclosures prepared by Investment Accounting specialists. Compile investment disclosures for the annual audited statutory financials. Review audited statutory financials for accuracy, consistency, and completeness
Review and maintain security master attributes, quality ratings, and system data fields required for GAAP / statutory reporting and investment management
Assist with processing and reporting of commercial mortgage loan portfolio and other alternative investments
Prepare monthly and quarterly consolidated reports of investment activity and holdings for internal and external distribution
Prepare annual / semi-annual cash flow testing files for actuaries
Prepare annual consolidated and subsidiary investment surveys
Ensure compliance of portfolio holdings with internal and domiciliary state investment limitations by preparing quarterly investment limitations review.
Backup system administrator for CAMRA investment software. Perform periodic system data reviews to ensure accuracy and completeness.
Ensure compliance with internal controls
Assist department director with periodic data reviews and special projects
Coordinate with portfolio managers, tax accountants, and controllers to ensure their GAAP and statutory reporting needs are met in an accurate and timely manner.
Assist with inquiries from internal and external auditors
Assist investment accounting specialists with questions and issues as needed
Microsoft Excel – intermediate to advanced level
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work as a team player
Ability to lead and train other team members
Knowledge of GAAP and Statutory reporting requirements
Lawson General Ledger system a plus
Wings annual statement software a plus
CAMRA Investment Accounting Software preferred
Precision LM Mortgage Loan Accounting Software preferred
Crystal Reports preferred
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
CPA or CGMA preferred
Minimum three-year’s experience in investment accounting and reporting in the insurance industry, or relevant experience
