The Current Economy and Accountant Careers—what's the Outlook?

Accountants primarily work with money. Some accountant jobs provide general tax consultation, and some accountants provide this service specifically for large companies or agencies. So if money is scarce, are accountants out of luck? What's the job industry like for an accountant right now?

Surprisingly, more and more businesses and even the average person are looking for knowledgeable accountants. Any extra money help during this time of economic struggle is a blessing, and people are realizing that accountants can help with budgeting, bills, and payment plans. So what does this mean for those in accounting, or those considering the career? It means that there are plenty of job opportunities available, and the time is now right to seize the waiting benefits.

One of the fastest growing areas of the accounting field is accounting positions for associates. These associates are generally hired by large companies, who need help keeping track of monetary records. And how is this different than a regular accountant’s duty? A regular accountant doesn’t always find the job security and variety afforded an associate accountant.

An accountant associate is an important part of the company he works for. They do not simply fill the regular accounting positions. An accountant associate is also like a secretary in many respects. They attend the important board meetings, and are primarily responsible for acquiring the external funding that every company needs. If you are looking for a career that offers you a more prestigious position, this may definitely be right for you.

An accounting associate has many duties, as one can begin to see, but primarily they are focused on a company’s budget. They oversee the money that comes in and out, and they are responsible for recording things accurately. They are not only in charge of keeping bills and payments to customers straight, but they are also in charge of delegating paychecks to the other workers in the office.

As mentioned above, they also perform more secretarial duties. An accounting associate will be expected to file documents and records, and also deal a lot with a company’s communications. This is where the variety comes in. If you chose to make your career as an accounting associate, you would be responsible for many different things—not just keeping the budget, like a regular accountant. You would deal a lot with a business’s paperwork, and in many ways you would act as a liaison between the company, and the public. An accounting associate is not just the guy who pays the bills.

The minimal educational requirement is a high school diploma, or the equivalent GED. A degree is desired, but there is no specific one needed. Accounting, basic accounting, even communications—a degree mostly gives your employer the message that you are a serious and competent person. Past experience will help you a lot in gaining this job! Many technical colleges have courses specifically for accounting associates, and more and more companies are beginning to recognize these qualified people. If you are seriously contemplating this career, you may want to check further into these educational options.

You will also need to have certain skills. Math understanding and operating skills are of course paramount, and right behind that falls computer competence. You will need to be able to use a computer, and type marginally well. Also, you will to possess a certain degree of communication skills. You will definitely be working with many different people, and you will need to be able to express information clearly—both orally and through the written word. You will also need to be able to conduct research, as many of your duties will be jobs involving research.

Good accounting associates are needed in virtually every business or agency, and the need seems to rise daily. Positions are opening everywhere, and now is the perfect time to consider this rewarding career.
