If you are majoring in accounting in your university degree, you will no doubt want to look for jobs in accounting, business or the financial sector. Although you may have your eye on jobs all through your university career and may even have a company in mind that you would like to work for, there is no point applying for any jobs until at least your last year of studies. Degree programs in accounting and business have an internship component. While you work in the field at a business, you can discretely inquire as to whether there are any job openings coming up by the time you graduate. Try to obtain your second internship at this same location and at the end of the internship, submit a job application. If you perform well during your work term, it is quite likely that you will receive a job offer before you even submit an application.

Check with your professors to find the types of jobs for accounting majors that are available in your field. There may be businesses that contact the faculty office looking for names of graduates that would like to schedule a job interview or your professors may have contacts with employers they know are hiring. Even if there is a part time position available, you might be able to work at an entry-level position in the evenings while you are still in school and this will help you get your foot in the door and well positioned to apply for a full time position when one becomes available. At any rate, it will provide you with work experience that will look well on your resume.

When you see jobs for accounting majors advertised in the newspapers, in magazines or online, you do have to carefully scrutinize the criteria for the job to make sure you do meet the requirements for the position. Your application will be discarded immediately if you do not have the qualifications the employer is looking for. One of the skills you need to utilize in the accounting industry is an ability to pay attention to details. If you apply for a position for which you are clearly not qualified, this shows the employer that you didn’t really read the posting.

Start looking to yourself to find skills you possess in addition to your educational qualifications that would demonstrate to employers how you would be an asset to the firm. Look at your previous experience in part time jobs and any project work you completed as part of your accounting major. Quite often you will realize that you do have most if not all of the skills listed in the entry-level jobs for accounting majors. You do have to start at the bottom and work your way up, so you will learn many of the practical skills as you gain experience working on the job.

There are many online recruiting agencies with jobs for accounting majors. You can register at one or more of these sites and post your resume online where potential employers can peruse them. The objective is to peak their interest enough to get called for an interview where you can demonstrate your talents and get hired for the job.
